Orofacial pain is an umbrella term for any pain associated with the mouth, jaws and the face. Orofacial pain disorders are usually multi-factorial and complex in nature ranging from mild interferences in daily life to debilitating conditions that significantly impact the quality of life.
Common conditions include temporomandibular disorders, masticatory musculoskeletal pain, sleep disorders, headaches, and other neurological disorders causing orofacial pain.
This field is aimed at the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation of those with Orofacial pain disorders.
A multi-disciplinary approach may be required to successfully manage these conditions which may require involvement of other professionals such as the dentist, physiotherapist, medical GP, ENT specialist or neurologist.
